Retainers are fixed or removable appliances worn for differing time intervals and are dependent on , depending on the orthodontic treatment type as well as the age of the patient. The retainer must be exactly as specified by the dentist, because treatment could take much longer than anticipated or fail altogether.

The retention phase ensures that the teeth do not regress back to their previous position and begins when the braces are finally removed. A retainer will be used to maintain the improved position of the teeth. A retainer is custom-made from from transparent plastic and thin wires to fit the teeth.
