Periodontics Overview

Periodontic disease (often called gum disease) and typically signified by red, swollen, painful, or bleeding gums, but in some cases has no noticeable symptoms., is a dental specialty dealing with prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease affecting the gums and jawbone.

Periodontal disease generally begins when bacteria living in plaque causes an infection in the surrounding tissues of the teeth and causes them to become irritated and painful. Eventually, this infection will; cause the jawbone to recede and the tooth to become loose.

Swollen and bleeding gums are early signs that your gums are infected with bacteria. If nothing is done, the infection can spread. It can destroy the structures that support your teeth in your jawbone. Eventually, your teeth can become so loose that they have to be extracted.

Dr. Yang is concerned with maintaining the function, health and aesthetics of the jawbone and tissues.
